It is typically used for relatively small flow rates. This is a G1/2 DC12V Pressure-Free Normal Closed Plastic Solenoid Valve that you can use to control  the flow of a liquid using your computer or microcontroller.

The 12V-DC solenoid valve is compatible with 1/2-inch (4-inch) threaded coupling, suitable for use with water and low viscosity fluids, normally closed, power supply and valve open.  Therefore, if the water is released  Water (or liquid) enters the solenoid when the solenoid is not being supplied, the water will be blocked, but if the power is supplied (Providing the magnetic mechanism inside the solenoid ), just the right amount will cause the valve to open and the water will flow through it.
